Indonesia shown a good performance when defeated by Jordan in warm-up match for World Cup qualifier

Ahead of the match against Iran in in the World Cup qualifier, the Team Garuda to be defeated by the host Jordan with a thin score 1-0.

 By Eric Noveanto

Indonesia was forced to lose in a friendly match against Jordan at the Amman International Stadium, having previously always achieved positive results in two recent friendly match, in August 27. However, it was quite satisfactory game for Indonesia. Moreover, the Jordan's goal created by Abdullah Deeb due to mistakes from Markus Horison in anticipation of the corner kick.

In this match, Team Garuda was much more to played in their defense. Mainly in the first half where the Firman Utina many rely on counterattacks. The goalkeeper Fery Rotinsulu had to work hard by doing a brilliant safe of a shoot by Amer Deeb. Unfortunately Fery only played 29 minutes after received a knee injury, he was replaced by Markus Horison.

When Markus appeared, Indonesia's goalkeeper remains safe until halftime. Although he kept being bombarded by Jordan attacker. Until halftime, the score remained 0-0. The goalkeeper Markus Horison finally concluded after 50 minutes through by corner kick from Abdullah Deeb, the ball directly rolled into the goalkeeper Markus.

In the remaining of conditions, Indonesia has not been able to develop the game. There's not much chance that they can be up to the second round after 70 minutes. Jordan actually did more attacking and long shooting from outside the penalty box. Luckily two chances of the host can be anticipated Markus.

Not satisfied with the attacking side, Indonesian coach, Wim Rijsbergen entered some new names which have a attacking style, as Irfan Bachdim and Ferdinand Sinaga. But disastrous for the Team Garuda, entering the end of game, Bambang Pamungkas lost to injury after got a tackle from defense of Jordan.

With the discharge of Bambang made the attacking composition was changing. Irfan is now paired with Ferdinand. Unfortunately this young strikers did not produce some significant results. Until the end of the game, the score remained 1-0 for the victory of the Jordan.

Football in Southeast Asia is still less well known than the East Asia or the Middle East, because this region is still in developing phase. Various methods are used each of the federation, such as young player development, infrastructure improvements, and the most important thing is to run the league. Why is it important to organize a league? because with the league, then the young player development system that will also run side by side, so the young players will get some mentalities and enough experience to play at international level. Of course every country has a policy of each of their league, there are start forming leagues, started the transition from amateur to semi-professional, and which of several already facing the industrial era. The following are explained on several leagues in Southeast Asia,

Thai Premier League

Thai Premier League founded in 2009 is a Thai professional league for association football clubs. At the top of the Thai football league pyramids, it is the country's primary football competition. Contested by 18 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with Thai Division 1 League. The Thai Premier League is a corporation in which the 18 member clubs act as shareholders. Seasons run from March to October, with teams playing 34 games each totalling 306 games in the season. In the Thai Premier League, most of the games are played during Saturdays and Sundays, with a few games played during the weekdays.

Before the inception of Thai Premier League, the highest level of club football was the Kor Royal Cup which was contested in a tournament format from 1916 to 1995. Thai Premier League was introduced in 1996 by the Football Association of Thailand (FAT), with 18 clubs who earlier competed for the Kor Royal Cup, in a double round robin league system. The Thai Premier league originally had 10 to 12 clubs each season until 2007, when it was expanded to 16 clubs. At the end of each season three bottom placed clubs are relegated to the Thai Division 1 League. And also in 2007, Thai Premier League was combined with Provincial League completely. Chonburi was the first club from Provincial League that was the champion of Thai Premier League in 2007 season.

The Thai Premier League has become popular not only for local fans but also for foreign players. Regulation which allows each club to have seven foreign players on its books and a maximum five in one match (7+5).

Indonesia Super League (ISL) is the highest level of professional competition for football clubs in Indonesia. This competition is managed and founded in 2008 by PT Liga Indonesia, under supervision of the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI). The 18 clubs participating in this top flight league need to pass a set of requirements and verification process, particularly related to professionalism and infrastructure feasibility.

Prior to 2008, the top level of professional football competition in Indonesia was the Premier Division, which is relegated to second tier afterwards. According to the AFC Final Assessment Ranking for 2009–2010 seasons (in which professional football leagues in Asia were ranked with respect to competitiveness, professionalism, marketability, and financial status of the league and its clubs - to determine the number of spots in the AFC Champions League), the Indonesia Super League was ranked 8th, the best in Southeast Asia.

The first edition of ISL used the same format for foreign players as the previous edition of top layer league in Indonesia, which allows club to have 5 foreign players from any countries without further restrictions. Only 3 of them are allowed to play together in a match. However, since the 2009-10 edition, Indonesian FA has applied a new restriction as known as "3+2" format, in which at least 2 of 5 foreign players in every club are originated from Asian countries. Furthermore, those foreign players need to conform with the following condition:

  • 1. Players from European or American countries should have played in the second division (third layer of their respective competition system).
  • 2. Players from African countries should have played in (at least) in the first division (second layer of their respective competition system).
  • 3. Players from Asian countries should have played (at least) in the premier/super league (highest layer of their respective competition system).
  • 4. Players from Southeast Asian countries should be in their national team.

In 2010-2011 edition, Indonesian FA introduced a new restriction regarding registration of new foreign players from African countries. Players from African countries who have never played before in Indonesia Super League shall be an international player for his country. The respective players have to show formal evidences that they have played for their country in official FIFA matches. Players failed to show such evidences will not get permit to play in Indonesia Super League 2010-2011.

Persipura Jayapura is the most successful team in ISL who has won the title as many as two. Average of spectators in Indonesia Super League is about 20000-25000 attendance. As a country that has a huge population, it is no wonder that Indonesia has many fanatical fans are always packed the stadium at every match.

Malaysia Super League

Malaysia Super League which is founded in 2004 is the top flight of football system in Malaysia. It replaced the M-League as the highest division a professional football team in Malaysia can participate in. MSL catered only to the top eight football teams in the country. The bottom two teams at the end of the season will be relegated to the Malaysia Premier League. The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) also decided to privatize the league and created MSL Sendirian Berhad (or MSL Proprietary Limited) to oversee the marketing aspects of the game.

The league used to have eight teams and teams would play three rounds of matches (21 matches in total). The first two rounds were played on a home/away format while the third round would be hosted by the stadium which had the bigger attendance during the first two rounds.

A football league competition involving the representative sides of the state football associations was first held in Malaysia in 1979. When it began, it was intended primarily as a qualifying tournament for the final knock-out stages of the Malaysia Cup. It was not until 1982 that a League Cup was introduced to recognize the winners of the preliminary stage as the league champions. Over the years, the league competition has gained important stature in its own right.

Initially the only teams only allowed to participate in the league were the state FA's, teams representing the Armed Forces and the Police, and teams representing the neighboring countries of Singapore and Brunei (though the Football Association of Singapore pulled out of the Malaysian League after the 1994 season following a dispute with the Football Association of Malaysia over gate receipts, and has not been involved since). In recent years, top Malaysian club teams have also been admitted to the league competition.

After the failure of the Malaysia national team in Asian Cup 2007, the MSL make a breakthrough in the regulation of foreign players, they decided not to use foreign players from 2008 to 2011. But foreign players is coming back to Malaysia Super League starting from 2012 season onwards.

Most successful teams in MSL are Kedah FA and Selangor FA, they have won MSL title each two times. Average of spectators in this league is about 10000-15000, the comparison is almost similar to what is in Indonesia, due to cultural similarities and behavior that is equally fanatical in their support of each team's pride.

The Myanmar Football Federation sought approval from the government to launch a nationwide league in February, 2008, and finally received permission to set up private clubs in December, 2008. The government has granted each club tax exemptions for an initial three-year period, while each club owner must provide a minimum of K200 million (approximately $200000) for initial investment.
